on reading Lolita
Lolita is a terrific book. I read it twice, the first time when I was only sixteen myself.
The first time I sympathised with Humbert and felt he was misunderstood. The second time I thought he was a bit of a loser. Self-deceiving.
These days there would be counseling available for these dispositions but then ... he seems a very lonely guy.
Hats off to Nabokov for his deep understanding. I'm still not sure what his position as the author was exactly. I read in an interview that he didn't like his main character, Humbert.
I had a fairly deep experience reading this book, very ponderous and querying.
