I know what you mean about feeling the need to purchase a book even when you know it will sit on your shelf for several months/years. I have many 'spur-of-the-moment' purchases from used book stores, it's ridiculous - but always good for a rainy weekend.
I've read some Hesse "Siddhartha" and "Steppenwolf." Both good books in their own respects.
I haven't read any Maugham but the 'Razor's Edge' has been repetitively playing on AMC (or TMC.) I was going to watch it a few days ago but I decided to do something else...
Concerning journals; the diaries or journals of Anais Nin are a fascinating read.
