touchy Mailer

Mailer used to be touchy about people saying his essays were better than his fiction.

They are. He is much more pushy and persuading in his essays. His fiction looks comparatively mainstream.

I liked 'An American Dream', though, by now, it must be dating. I thought his book on Oswald was better, but there again, its topical feature work - and a mystery for interpretation.
