As soon as you finish a work, it is automatically copyrighted. But the purpose of registering with the copyright office is to prove when you did it. I often wonder if, by posting something on the internet, shouldn't that also be a good way to prove when you did it?
But I don't know the legal aspects of that, and I'm sure a court would prefer the old, standard copyright if you ever had to prove something.
