DIONYSUS AND DISHES

—-for Mary Kirtz

O Apollo at my right shoulder,
This demon Dionysus to my left
Seduces me into the living-room,
As these dishes here in the kitchen,
Three days unclean, complain of their crust--
And even in the living-room
The ledges wear fur coats made of dust.

The floor is littered with the lint and clutter
Of several weeks unwork, yet to the corner,
Where the lamp manages a dim light, I climb,
Through the slums beneath my knees,
And settle into the corner of the couch,
Where these books are still warm from this morning,
From these daily readings above duty.
