Yeah, I do know the meaning of "cast a pall", but after reading your post I imagined you initially reading the choices with a real upbeat attitude, and then after reading Stevadore's post here, you began looking at the submissions with a more critical eye, as if you were asking yourself, "Are these really that good? That guy didn't seem to think so. Stevedore, whoever he is, is seeing these stories in a different light than I am....
Hence my remark of "reality check"... as if you now had to shift gears in your thinking and ponder the strength of the stories creating the pall you mentioned.
Sorry, I have a tendency to dig into the silence between words.
