hello --
i recently read an interesting article about the presence of social and political activism in literature by more recent authors such as norman mailer, gore vidal and alice walker. while this article itself was really more an op/ed piece about the nature of "political correctness" affecting what is accepted as literature and what is merely the latest in a stack of pundit best-sellers, it did make me wonder about other connections between literature and politics, and how this can affect our views and opinions just as news stories can.
so, i'm wondering if you can provide recent/modern examples of other authors/works that are centered on political views, commentary or activism -- either more obviously or metaphorically.
and, do you think there is a discrepency between what is considered "literature" (or accepted by society and the academic world as such) and what is brushed of more as propaganda? or is there a line? or a difference? if so, how do you think this affects your perception of these authors/works?
and i think that's it.
