the illusion of nations

Posted to Poetry and Politics

I love it how people from countries other than USA think they can declare themselves innocent of all political sins because they aren't Americans.

All nations are complicit in the evils of the world. If Canadians feel politically innocent, it's because they are not a major player in world politics, but they sure do participate in and benefit from the world's economy. Some guy in Canada didn't vote for George Bush, and neither did I -- is my relationship to George Bush any different from his?

We are all citizens of the world, and if Americans need to feel ashamed then I think every human being needs to feel ashamed. Personally, I'm just going to feel hopeful instead. Maybe one helpful answer is to realize that national consciousness itself is a dead end. Maybe we all need to forget what country we live in and think about what species we belong to.
