It's a mistake to think I am "hot" for war. I am not, but there are worse things. Slavery, Genocide, Persecution, etc.
The first World World was called the War to end all Wars because it was so horrible. It introduced industrial mechanized warfare. The machine-gun, the tank, the airplane with it's bombs, poison gas. huge and rapid fire cannon.
Civilians were generally spared but a whole generation of young men were destroyed. The world was bleeding. The war was fought about nothing, not land, not economics, not religion, nothing. The advent of the train kept feeding troops to the frontlines which remained stagnent for years.
Neither side could win, they just kept fighting not to lose. It brought the Russian revolution when the troops got tired of dying for the Czar. America entered when the exhausted Germans made one last tired offensive towards Paris. The fresh, although green American soldiers were enough to tilt the balance towards France and England and ended the war.
The world swore..NO MORE WAR...EVER.
Then came Hitler and Franco and Mussolini and the Imperial Japanese Empire. They had their reasons, reasonable enough to get the full support of their people.
France and England remembered WW1 and were super pacifist.
America was isolationist.
Result: 30 MILLION DEAD in WW2.
Should the French have gone to war to stop Hitler in 1936
when he sent troops to retake the Saar? German documents reveal that he took a gamble and was prepared to back off if confronted.
No country dissuaded Italy from invading Ethiopia.
Germany armed and backed Franco in Spain and sent in the Condor Legion to bomb Guernica.
Appease, appease, Hitler wants only peace, that was the word everyone wanted to believe because everybody hated war.
RESULT: 30 MILLION DEAD IN WW2
NEED I GO ON? I'M NOT HOT ON WAR.
