Vlad the Impaler is a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. His repeated victories over the Turks eventually led to the freedom of Greece and several surrounding areas when the Turk's military power swayed in the wake of several crushing defeats (most brought about by massive numbers of Turkish troops going AWOL on the march in past miles and miles of rotting corpses piled five or more high on huge sticks). He was evil as hell, but he got the job done. Perfect example of military leadership doubling as political leadership. Everything comes down to risk assessment in terms of lives lost... people who can think like that are usually only vaguely humane.
