Jim Thompson who I think is one of the most underrated authors (The Grifters, Pop 1280, A Hell of a Woman).
And Cornell Woolrich (Rear Window, The Bride Wore Black).
If you want a book that just kicks you in the gut, check out Pop 1280 or A Hell of a Woman. Thompson is the shit.
