Obviously, you'll get a highly subjective, and somewhat fictionalized, account of the "key points" of his life if you read his novels.

Reading his novels (which are, admittedly, autobiographical in nature) is no substitute for reading a comprehensive biography of him. It really depends on what you're looking to glean from whatever it is you read.
