I've written a book about Jean Shepherd, radio improviser of the 1950s-1970s, to be published fall 2004. David Amram tells me that he and Kerouac listened to and appreciated Shepherd's late-night style. Shepherd did an appreciative eulogy on his program when Kerouac died.

According to Shepherd, Kerouac gave him galleys to ON THE ROAD, and in the book, the characters listened to a radio talker (who was Shepherd). This has not been found in the published book. Maybe it was in a portion cut before publication?

I've written Ann Charters with the question but she has not answered. Do you know of any way I can confirm this Shepherd reference, so I can include it in my book? Is there a way of searching a longer version of the manuscript for the reference?
