Richard Halliburton

Oh, yes, I know of him.

My fifth grade teacher would sometimes stop classwork to read from the Book of Marvels. She misunderstood the appeal. She thought it was wanderlust and the spirit of adventure which moved us, but we were part of a community which never went anywhere. Even the Greyhound station withered and died without notice. What we appreciated was a class period when we didn't have to do anything.

I saw another book on Halliburton some years later, and I wish I had grabbed it. Reported in there was all about how the amazing adventures of the Book of Marvels and sequels were all bunk - he enhanced his travelers tales, like so many others.

Thanks for the memories.
