Dominica is not the same as the Dominican Republic

Posted to Poetry and Politics

Hey Jimboloco, just to clarify a tiny point. Dominica is a mountainous island near Guadeloupe and Martinique and is often confused with the Dominican Republic (which, as you know, shares the island historically known as Hispaniola with Haiti).

I mention this just because I've travelled to Dominica twice in recent years and am going again in March. The fear is always that my checked bagagge will be shipped to the Dominican Republic instead. Hasn't happened yet, though.

Also, the Prime Minister of Dominica, a young man of 49, passed away suddenly last week. That landed Dominica on the main CNN webpage for about 1/2 a day. That's pretty heady news for an undeveloped island like Dominica.
