richard rorty: on heidegger and others

Posted to What Are You Reading?

he claims that heidegger is merely one of what nietzsche calls "ascetic priests", who look beyond (or do not look at all at) details of e.g. suffering to find essences i.e. "being."

if the west is to crumble in the future, rorty hopes that the asians and africans rediscover that civilization through the details and narratives of novelists like dickens, rather than through the ahistorical theories of heidegger.

the pragmatist rorty is a people's philosopher, though im not sure such titles, or titles at all, are just ok with him.
