also: philosophy and the mirror of nature
yes, i meant public intellectual. thanks.
i also like his history of modern philosophy in PHILOSOPHY AND THE MIRROR OF NATURE. its amazing how kant and descartes were able to (falsely) institutionalize philosophy as THE foundation of culture, and as the study of how the mind correctly represents reality.
rorty's promotion of the use of metaphors, and of redescriptions of "how things hang together" via different vocabularies, rather than upholding one vocabulary (like philosophy) as the supreme standard of everything, is also very interesting and gives way to non-academic, as you say populist, philosophy and literature, very much like art brought out of museums and to the people--or public.
