wasn't much of a drinker at all, nor Tolstoy or Chekhov. Gogol, purely my hunch here, may have hit the vodka tray a few times before the pickled hering plate and potatoes! Dead Souls is a knock-down riot. I'm a sober alcoholic and for some perverse reason I always remember from biographies who was a fellow hooch hound and who was not!
