I'm here guys!... re. Ferlinghetti - 'Two Scavengers...'

Posted to What Are You Reading?

just 'across the pond' and with sopradic net access! When you guys talk at 11am i'm somewhere else in the day! therefore away from the net.. i wish i could spend more time here!!

i'm 'doing' this poem with my group as part of, (get this!) poems from other cultures and traditions.. we've just done a question comparing the ways poets present people... did it with either 'Night of the Scorpion' by Nissim Ezekiel, 'Vultures' by Chinua Achebe (personal favourite) or 'Island Man' by Grace Nichols....

Their thoughts included:

discussion of the word "beautiful" in the title and its links with the Hippies etc.

comments on how the layout (which is all over the place) reflects the "small gulf" and whether it is really a small gulf that he's talking about

to be "casually coifed" is stupid - waste time and effort on looking like you've made no effort?!

that the younger of the two scavengers is like the man in the car and somehow shows a crossroads, like each see in the other what 'could have been'

i love the group i teach they have the best responses and i love that they respond with their feelings, their take on all the poems we look at - i'll share further examples with you guys!
