Gainesville Reading

I met Ken at a writing conference in Gainesville, Florida. I believe this was 1979. It was while I was a college student at any rate, prior to 1981. John Ashberry and Peter Taylor were also at the conference, and Ken read a story about cattle on his farm in Oregon. I seem to recall that I later saw it in "Esquire" magazine, but none of the titles in online bibliographies strike a bell.
Could it have been "The Day After Superman Died"?
