She Speaks from Rote

Posted to Poetry

She speaks from rote,
she quotes her father
as if the thoughts were
all her own;
as if his shadow did not
always linger
over every tale she’s told-
and every bowl she’s smoked
and the secrets
twisted into the shape
of hope-
that she could still
be an individual
with original thoughts
to seal the deal
and topping it off-
the progeny
2 precious little cherries
to mold into what
she was expected to be
a little less heavy- maybe
opposing everything
for the sake of creating
an argument-
always sure she will win
because of her
superlative
upbringing
and plethora
of sarcastic witticisms
Democrats are pansies
and
EVERYONE
is dispensable-
the idea wasn’t hers
but she will still
ride it until the wheels
fall off
