my mother was a superstar
in her own local way

she was on tv every day
live commercials and an exercise show

when I was in gradeschool she was in theater
and came to the school as Widget the elf

she was an elf, I knew her in pixels
every afternoon I saw her on the tube

when she turned fifty she called me crying
and I went to her like a sucker of a son

she had a picture on the mantle
of her in her prime, and wept about where it went

her life and her youth and her beauty
her grasp and her picture of herself

she was no philosopher, no historian
but lines around the eyes erased by surgery

don't steal my wrinkles that way
I earned them honestly
