The autonomy of the individual
I find American society to be bathed in the sewage of sexual innuendo.
We must consider:
Americans are made to believe sex is filthy; we curb, censor and eliminate programs for the "children". However, many who are censoring are the ones who promote sexy, burlesque half time shows with bobbing pop singers with tight low cut shirts and hip hoppers who grab at their crotch with every bleeped, violent lyric.
We cannot claim that Americans hate sex when we can clearly see that every commercial is flooded by puns, innuendos and in-your-face sexual conduct. Americans LOVE sex. It sells, as they say. What happens is that we have fundamentalists, religious folk and conservatives who cry out in shame, disgust and anger at the "alarming" sexual misconduct of commercialized America.
Sex is not a disgusting act. What appears repulsive to me is the capitalistic value that has been given to the anatomy. Its not what Britney Spears is wearing, its why. She wears low-rise jeans with a high cut thong to ulitmately buy herself a new house in some exotic foreign land (an exotic land to tourists but the native population has an increasing rate of mortality and starvation).
This is what has made sex dirty, the very fact that it is no longer intimate, or lets not even say intimate, for sex can be a very public thing- it is no longer respected for the act that it is. I am not campaigning for the idea that sex should be between two beings who love one another, because we can clearly see our society is not based on this and its not realistic. Sex is something that is incredibly public, and this is not an evil-it is how it is portrayed and delivered, how we have dehumanized it and marketed it so that 13 year old girls wear tight fitting clothes not just to look cute and grab the attention of their crush (something understandable) but also in the hopes that the crush may ask her to give him head.
This is what disgusts me beyond conveyance
Sex is a marketed good we package for both retail and wholesale, so that it reaches many. Children who have yet to understand what a kiss is cannot distinguish what the difference between her and Britney Spears is and decides to kiss her bestfriend on the mouth. Clearly, this is not wrong, but a child can not understand the entire ideology that her kiss brings forth. Sex has become a veneral disease that everyone wants but everyone also tries to curb. It is not filthy, dirty, we have made it so that everyone bathes in sex, everyone wants to be sexy, but then everyone shuns it when it comes down to talking about things.
It is an act
Society has lost respect for sex; we must not impose norms; for multiple partners, homosexual relations and many more different kinds of sexual acts are, in my opinion, fine. My liberalism allows me to follow the credo, to each their own. Of course, I must clarify, I do not tolerate anything that is lethal and illegal. I must emphasize that the minute your thoughts, acts and ideas affect me directly, I can no longer support your actions.
A clear example:
Walking to school at 16, I realized a car was following me. I ignored him, until he pulled into a spot next to me. His windows were rolled all the way down and I realized it was a man masturbating openly and he wanted to give me a peek.
This disturbed me in many ways, because I myself had many childhood sexual traumas of young boys imposing themselves on me. I have overcome all of my traumas and fears myself, but only with age and experience, so that now I can understand sex.
This brings me to my main point, which is sexuality in children. We are all sexual beings from the moment we are brought into this world. However, there are certain things a child cannot assimilate and understand, and many things can stem from viewing what elders would call "just a porno" that we as beings that are more knowledgeable cannot comprehend.
In the first grade, a classmate sexually molested me. I never told anyone what he did to me, believing it was my fault. First, I would like explain that most parents do not explain sex to their children until they reach puberty. I learned about it in class in the 4th grade and also through my parents who were very open and helpful. Nevertheless, I digress. This 7-year-old classmate only bothered me sexually once or twice, but he tormented me year round with other acts of violence. He cut my long hair, he hit me, he would gang up on me on the bus ride home, and he threw rocks at my house, breaking the windows. I only told my parents about his abuse when I could not take it any longer and they were my voice.
His actions and those of a few others growing up has affected me greatly, and only now, at 21, can I completely move on.
The reason I tell this story is to point out the disturbance this child possessed. There is no way he could have conceived the idea of lifting up a girl's skirt, despite her screams not to, from thin air. Much of what he did was too ahead of his time and one wonders where he got these ideas from. A child's mind is a very beautiful and fragile thing that one must treat with delicacy. To expose them to complex, brutal or plain material that is just beyond their mental capacity is to mutilate them, it is bound to harm them in ways that will eventually manifest themselves.
The autonomy of the individual lies in the ability to act as they so chose. I stand by this completely. However, the autonomy and right of the child is not taken into account in the idea of watching pornography on one's porch or in a car (although quite frankly, my qualm is about watching movies in a car when you are suppossed to be concetrating on the road. Its not about limiting the individual's right because of some moral, religious or governmental code- no- it is to respect the right of those, including children who have not a say. The autonomy of the individual is lost if he infringes on the rights of another.
If you want to watch porno, do it in an area where it is only you (and your participating partner[s]) and no one else can witness it. Respect everyone else's rights as well.Let us all live in as much of an autonomous state as we can, considering we are living under a "democracy".
