that whenever someone asks the ever-charming question, "what are you?" it's easier to be honest and direct and get it over with, since ignoring it or coming up with something funny to say doesn't really work so well.

oh oh oh! i have something completely unrelated to tell you. there's a lady who works upstairs in my office building... she makes really cool jewelry and she makes her own beads. lampwork and some other kind (i'm not hip to the beadmaking jargon). she and i were talking about those purple earrings that you sent up for the shindig and i immediately claimed as my own, and she said she was looking to expand her beadmaking and i said i would mention her to you at some point, so i'm doing that now. mission accomplished.
