I agree with you. I enjoyed 1984; but I really liked Homage to Catalonia. I would also recommend Down and Out in London and Paris. It's a very good description of life in the lower depths. It may change your attitude about hotel and restaurant food. (I spentsome time behind the secnes in a "fine" hotel; it was many years after Orwell did; buthis story rang true.)
