My approach would have been to wait those 7-12 months. Oh hell, what do I know? I suppose it just gets down to whether you believe the UN inspections would have had any chance of being effective. Maybe this war would have been necessary eventually. I'd be foolish to discount that possibility. But I still believe war should be a true last resort (especially first-strike war), and it should be waged with the consensus and cooperation of our allies. And given the circumstances noted in my post, I definitely think Bush & Co. jumped the gun on this one. I saw it this way in the beginning, and I still haven't seen anything to change my mind.
