I don't think this is truly at issue here. They simply seek after some factitious (and therefore safe) idiotic issues for their constituency to bite into. They need something on their election program, no? By dealing with this artificial gay bullshit, they're evading real issues -- like universal health care, for example. They're leading morons by the nose.
