some minor points

Posted to Poetry and Politics

first, a couple grammatical points:

shouldn't The Crimean War was waged in behalf of the British East India Company be ' The Crimean War was waged on behalf of the British East India Company'?

Dardenelles is Dardanelles...i think

now, Dardanelles is the British name for the passage of water...the turks consider it an insult to call it that...they prefer The Bosphorous, just as they prefer Istanbul to Constantinople

which reminds me of a song by They Might Be Giants

Istanbul (not Constantinople)

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way

So take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Istanbul (Istanbul)
Istanbul (Istanbul)

People just liked it better that way

Istanbul

but i digress

up to you if you want to keep Dardanelles, being in period and all...thought you might like to know

now, i read something a little while back about the light brigade charge being a calculated ruse to draw the russians away from something else...persia maybe...awfully cold and calculated...might be an angle worth exploring

lastly, i kind of get turned off when things like the war here was caused by this and that and it is stated matter of factly, when it isn't really all that matter of fact, near as i can tell...but i guess it's an op-ed........
