However, knowledge of war history only takes you so far. No current situation ever completely replicates a previous one. At some point, both practical and ethical judgments are required in deciding whether to go to war, how to pursue it, and what its ramifications will be; judgments perhaps beyond the counsel of ex-generals and book-smart history buffs, at times, or I least I like to think so.

Patton might help you win the war, at a certain real cost, but not necessarily demonstrate why it was the best option to pursue in the first place, if other options were available.
