possibly runs deeper than that.
The prime example here is Dubya and crew. The basic idea being that when these people attain power, they often fancy themselves as "called by God", and therefore "accountable to God" not only for themselves but for those whom they govern.... just a wacky alternate theory which might partly explain the persistent political agenda of the religious Right. But I agree that this gay marriage Amendment is little more than a political smokescreen.
Presumably, "civil union" would grant gay couples similar status and rights as those of married hetero couples. Whatever we decide to do on the issue, it should be on the national level and not left up to the states, due to the potential quagmire of custody and property rights issues when couples split and move across state lines. That's my take on it, at least.
