Personal experience is best, I think (Thucydides, Caesar, Remarck.) I added a possibility of relying on indirect knowledge in order to relax the criteria somewhat (Keegan, Roberts, Taylor.) But one does have to have at least some reasonable grounds -- direct or indirect -- to believe that one knows what one's talking/writing about.
