Reading Desolation In California

Posted to Utterances

I was talking the other day about "Desolation"--I read it 14 years ago in outer (the Far East) Los Angeles with a view of Mt. Baldy, ancient old precipice of the San Gabriels. There were parts I loved, mainly the main characters forays in San Fran, however, the nuances of the card game Kerouac devised were beyond me, and I think it made the read a bit more labored than was necessary. Still, mindlosing, I love those scenes in San Fran, the parties, Ray Charles records, the dwelling on the hill--good stuff. What do you think?
