A friend of mine who I thought was one of the great men - painter, philosopher, poet - thought Finnegan's Wake was the best book. I couldn't read it. What is there? I remember thinking way back when, that Ulysses wasn't bad. But re-Finnegan, it occurred to me later, that Benji's Tale in Sound and the Fury was what Joyce would have written if he could.
