I guess Gary Snyder's latest major work, Mountains and Rivers Without End, wasn't really a new work -- similar to HST's latest.

I think it's okay that writers spend their later years finally polishing up and releasing the stuff they've had the most trouble finishing over the years. It's another form of vitality, I guess.
