i've read the first volume of h.s.t letters (1955-1967) and it's easilly my favourite thompson novel...a lot of people tend to focus on his behaviour rather than his writing, but by reading the letters it gives you a different insight with regards to just how dedicated and talented the guy really is....
but of course the wierdness still bubbles under the surface - threatening to ride to n.y.c on a chopped harley and shoot an editor in the guts with an expanding filth flare, springs to mind...
