I think about T.S. Eliot a lot. Of course he was elitist with a vengeance -- social, racial and class snobbery seemed to be the absolute bedrock basis of his sense of self. I do like to think of Beatness as completely opposed to elitism. However, Eliot is a strange case in that his writing seemed to blast beyond the narrow parameters of his "persona". Nobody who reads his work could possibly think of him as closed-minded, despite the image he projected. So I agree with you -- in some strange sense, Eliot was a proto-Beat. I'm sure he would have gagged at the very thought ...
