It was winter, so sunlight didn’t stream through the bedroom windows like it had in the summer, but when he shifted into consciousness, he could tell it was morning. He didn’t move or open his eyes. He just stayed where he was, a blissful smile drifting across his mouth, pure, like virgin snow.

He took a deep breath in through his nostrils and let it out through his mouth. He was still pleasantly not quite awake, comfortably warm, and peaceful. Keeping his eyes closed to preserve the touch of sleep, he decided he would wait awhile before getting up. He yawned, and drifted back to his dreams.

His hands never wandered to the side of the bed where she usually slept. If they had, he would’ve noticed that the sheets were cold. He would’ve opened his eyes, heard the eerie silence in the house, known that she had left him sometime in the night.

But there was time for these discoveries later on. For now, he would sleep undisturbed.
