For the past few years, I’ve adroitly been entertaining less “why did you…” questions from and to people.Most times their “reasons” why are ill-conceived, stupid or just plain fucked up. Frankly, I don’t care why some idiot cut me off on the freeway. Who knows why, he probably doesn’t know himself. If he hits me, I don’t want an explanation. I don’t care. Just pay for the damage.

I believe the relevance to the topic is that publishers, and editors, have their own agenda. Most times this will come across as a type of “explanation.” On the best of days it will have more than a scant bearing on reality, and good taste.
